The fun factor
Stoos is a charming car-free mountain village easily accessible via the world's steepest funicular (110%!) from Stoosbahn parking, or by gondola from Morschach. It's famous for the ridge hike Fronalpstock with 360° views over Lake Lucerne, accessible by taking additional chair lift from Stoos. However, these trails aren't stroller-friendly and have steep sections, making them less suitable for little kids.
But there's a hidden gem in Stoos perfect for young children and first-time hikers: the Moor Trail. Just a five-minute walk from the funicular station, or a 10 minutes walk from the gondola station, this 1.6 km trail is flat, safe, and stroller-friendly, with fun activities along the way. It's an excellent adventure for families, offering a safe and enjoyable hiking experience.
Here are our top 4 Fun Factors of Moor Trail in Stoos
1. Enjoy the Stoos Lake (Stoos-Seeli)
The hike begins at the picturesque Stoos Lake (Stoos-Seeli), a perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature. There's a small pool accessible by a bridge where you can sit and cool off your feet in a pond. In spring and early summer, it is full of tadpoles, much to the kids' delight as they try to catch them.
Each spring and summer, the local shipping company releases trout into Stoos-Seeli, making fishing possible without registration. Fishing rods can be rented at the Guesthouse Bergsonne or directly at the lake on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer season for CHF 10 per day. We didn't try it ourselves, but it looked like a lot of fun!
2. Embark on the moor quest
To start your adventure, just follow the easy-to-spot Moor Trail signs. Grab a free flyer at the beginning of the hike (just next to the Stoos Lake), which includes a map marking all the moor stations and a page with colorful circles – these are your quest! Each moor station has a "Moorsezeichen" (which literally means Morse Code) metal disk with bumps. Rub the disk onto your flyer at each station, and if you collect them all, you can claim a small prize at the shop next to the top Stoos funicular station.
We were initially puzzled because the rubbings don’t leave clear marks – but that’s the fun part! It’s all symbolic, and there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Even the youngest adventurers can join in.
3. Hit the fun stations along the way
Along the trail, you'll encounter interactive stations that offer unique ways to explore the world of moorlands. Each stop features educational boards filled with intriguing facts, as well as engaging activities. You can challenge yourself with the memory game along the bridge (our favorite!), delve into discovery games, marvel at giant statues of brush-like plants, enjoy letter games and more!
Along the Moor Trail, you'll also come across the first (or last, depending on your direction) marble rolling station of the Fronalp Trail. There's a ball dispenser right next to it where you can buy a wooden ball for 2 CHF. Just keep in mind, this will be the only rolling station on the Moor hike.
We decided to buy a ball and had a lot of fun playing with it. Afterward, we put it aside for when we tackle the Fronalpstock Trail – hopefully soon! It gave us something to look forward to on our next adventure.
Plus, right next to the top Stoos funicular station, you can meet and take a photo with Fröneli, the adorable young dwarf goat and Stoos' cute mascot. Nearby, there’s a fun balance game and a tiny playground to kick off the adventure with some extra fun.
4. Experiment with the water flow (water playground)
The highlight for our kid was the water playground, located near the far end of the lake. It features a series of dams and plugs to experiment with and change the water flow. Despite its small size and simple concept, it kept our child entertained for almost an hour! And the views from the Stoos water playground are beautiful.
5. Have fun at the indoor playroom
Right next to the Stoos top funicular station is the Stoos Lodge Hotel, featuring a restaurant and an indoor playroom, both accessible to non-guests (the indoor playroom is available for an extra charge). It's a great way to wrap up your adventure.
It's always amazing to see kids, tired from the hike, suddenly find new energy when they spot all the slides, trampolines, and climbing spaces.
The fitness factor
The hike is 1.6 km and can be walked in less than an hour, but with all the fun at the water playground and play stations, plus a picnic break, it took us almost 3 hours.
The path is mostly flat with a 15-meter ascent and descent, making it very easy. It consists mainly of a natural trail with a small section featuring a wooden bridge.
The path is safe and easy with no drop-offs, making it suitable even for younger kids. It is also off-road stroller-friendly.
The views factor
Stoos and the hike are at around 1400 meters above sea level. The area is lush and green, offering beautiful views. You can see the lake and moorland up close, with mountains in the distance. While it's not a high mountain view, it's equally stunning.
The food factor
Right next to the Stoos funicular station, you'll find two restaurants: Stoos Lodge Hotel and Restaurant Sternegg, with more dining options available around Stoos village. We tried Stoos Lodge, which is very family friendly, and were happy with their offerings, especially our family favorite – sweet potato fries!
Along the trail, you’ll find two beautiful picnic spots. One is right at the lake, and the other is next to the marble rolling station. Both spots feature wooden tables and a barbecue, with wood provided. They are perfect for a relaxing break.
