The fun factor
Aeschi bei Spiez is a charming mountain village in the Bernese Oberland, located above Lake Thun between Spiez and Interlaken. It is best known for it's spectacular views of the iconic Niesen — the famous pyramid-shaped mountain that dominates the landscape.
Despite being close to some of Switzerland’s most visited destinations, Aeschi still feels wonderfully calm and undiscovered, making it a true hidden gem for families looking for a more relaxed Swiss mountain experience. The area combines beautiful scenery with easy access to family adventures, including themed hikes, marble rolling trails, playgrounds, treasure hunts, mountain railways, and panoramic walking paths.
It’s also a fantastic base for exploring the wider Bernese Oberland while escaping the crowds often found in nearby tourist hotspots.
To help you plan, we’ve detailed the Aeschi bei Spiez adventures below.
I. Adventures around the village
Go on a marble rolling hike (Chugeli Trail)
The Chugeli trail in Aeschi bei Spiez is a 4.7 km hike suitable for families, featuring marble rolling stations along the path. Beginning just outside the village, the trail swiftly takes you through open fields, offering stunning views of the famous Niesen mountain in the background, and concludes in the village. It's not suitable for strollers.

Along the hike, kids can stop at different wooden marble rolling constructions and send their marbles racing down tracks, which makes the walking feel much more exciting and motivating — and honestly, we can totally see why these trails are such a hit with kids.
We enjoyed that the trail passes by a llama farm, making it a perfect picnic spot with a nice view. Although the llamas aren't always there, we were lucky to see a group of them grazing and watching us.
The trail was built by local families and volunteers, which adds to it's authentic Swiss village feel. More info here.
The fitness factor
The trail is 4.7 km long, easy, and slightly downhill, but not suitable for strollers. It goes mainly through fields, with only a short section passing through the village.

Public toilets available at the start and finish

Hunt for Treasures
There are also three family hikes with a treasure hunt around the village — one stroller friendly, two not stroller friendly, all treasure hunt style. You can pick up the maps from the kiosk next to the village main square or from the tourism office. There are different routes with different distances and difficulty levels.
Some routes are designed for smaller kids who cannot read yet — they use pictures and landmarks children need to find along the way. Others include questions that need to be answered by finding landmarks and information around the area.
We did the Rätsel Trail, where kids have to answer questions along the way. At the start, we received a large map with questions and instructions guiding us to the next landmark to look for. Every time, we turned it into a little family competition to see who could spot the next landmark first 😊 Once we found it, there were questions related to that specific place or object. And if you solve all the tasks, you get a small prize at the end.

The fitness factor
The trails are easy, circular walks going through villages and fields, with beautiful views overlooking the famous Niesen mountain. Distances vary from 3 to 6 km.

II. Adventures on the mountain
Conquer Niesen
Just 3 km from Aeschi bei Spiez, there is a funicular station taking you up the famous Niesen mountain often called the Swiss pyramid because of it's unique shape. At over 2300 meters above sea level, you step out straight into amazing views
Even just taking the funicular up and down is already a fun adventure.
Just a short, safe and stroller-friendly walk from the station, there is a restaurant, a playground, a viewing platform, and a small shop where you can buy books about the Niesen fox — the mountain's local mascot.
If you have experienced little hikers in the family, you can also combine it with the famous Panorama Walk (hike #6 on the map) - one of the best-known hikes in the area, with incredible lake and mountain views almost the entire way. The classic route goes from the top station down towards the middle station and is around 5 km long. It’s mostly downhill but still quite demanding, with steep sections, lots of elevation change, and narrow stony paths in parts.

There is also a shorter option from the middle station (hike #5), which is what we did as the panorama walk was still covered in snow when we visited.
Regardless of the route, we would only recommend it for families comfortable with mountain hiking and wearing proper shoes. More info here.
Practical info:
Arrival by car:
Park in the Niesenbahn parking, just 3 km from Aeschi bei Spiez (Heustrichstrasse 10B, 3711 Mülenen)
Arrival by public transport: Take the train or bus to Mülenen.
Take the funicular up to Schwandegg, and then another funicular to Niesen Kulm
You can then take the funicular back down or hike between Niesen Kulm and Schwandegg. Many people take the funicular up and hike down to the middle station. Hike #6 (Panoramaweg) is the most spectacular, with incredible views throughout, but it is not stroller friendly and is best suited to confident hikers with proper footwear.
Explore Suldtal Nature Reserve
The Nature Factor: Suldtal Nature Reserve is a protected alpine valley above Aeschi bei Spiez, known for it's waterfalls, mountain river and beautiful mountain scenery. It is a popular destination for families thanks to it's easy walking trails, Gasthaus Suld restaurant with a playground, and a scenic barbecue spot. In summer, a bus runs through the valley, making it easy to reach different starting points or shorten your walk. You can find more info here.
Where to stay: The comfort factor
When staying overnight, you can choose between holiday apartments, hotels, and campsites.

Or do what we did and go for something a bit more unusual! We stayed in a privately rented yurt booked through AirBnB — a traditional round tent originally used by nomadic families in Central Asia, but adapted with modern comforts. We had proper beds, heating, our own terrace with a barbecue, and access to a kitchen and bathroom in separate nearby buildings. The views were incredible, surrounded by nature, and it felt like a real adventure while still being comfortable. A fantastic experience!
During our adventures around Aeschi, we also discovered this mountain ranch accommodation. It looked like great fun and would definitely be a hit with little horse lovers. If we ever go back, it would be high on our list to check out.
