Stoos Moor Trail and Stoos Fronalp Trail - Everything else parents will want to know

The fun factor

Stoos is a beautiful car-free mountain village set at around 1,300 m. You can get there in two ways: by the steepest funicular in the world or by gondola from Morschach — and honestly, even getting there (and just being in the village) feels like an adventure.

There are plenty of hikes here, but our two favourites for families, covered in this article, are:

  • Moor Trail – shorter, easier, perfect for a first hike

  • Fronalp Trail – longer, more alpine, with views from higher up

Starting from the same spot as Fronalp Trail you can extend your peak adventure with the Fronalpstock Panorama Trail — an easy, stroller-friendly summit walk with spectacular views, starting from the same place as the Fronalp Trail. It’s a great way to enjoy some of Stoos’ famous ridge-style panoramas.

Plus, right next to the top Stoos funicular station, you can meet and take a photo with Fröneli, the adorable young dwarf goat and Stoos' cute mascot. Nearby, there’s a fun balance game and a tiny playground to kick off the adventure with some extra fun.

Here are our top Fun Factors of Moor Trail and Fronalp Trail in Stoos

Fun Factors for Both Hikes - Moor Trail & Fronalp Trail:

1. Enjoy the Stoos Lake (Stoos-Seeli)

The Moor Trail hike begins at the picturesque Stoos Lake (Stoos-Seeli), a perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature. This is also where the Fronalp Trail ends.

There's a small pool accessible by a bridge where you can sit and cool off your feet in a pond. In spring and early summer, it is full of tadpoles, much to the kids' delight as they try to catch them.

Each spring and summer, the local shipping company releases trout into Stoos-Seeli, making fishing possible without registration. Fishing rods can be rented at the Guesthouse Bergsonne or directly at the lake on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer season for approximately CHF 10 per day. We didn't try it ourselves, but it looked like a lot of fun!

2. Experiment with the water flow (water playground)

The highlight for our kid was the water playground, located near the far end of the lake. It features a series of dams and plugs to experiment with and change the water flow. Despite its small size and simple concept, it kept our child entertained for almost an hour! And the views from the Stoos water playground are beautiful.

3. Have fun at the indoor playroom

Right next to the Stoos top funicular station is the Stoos Lodge Hotel, featuring a restaurant and an indoor playroom, both accessible to non-guests (the indoor playroom is available for an extra charge). It's a great way to wrap up your adventure.

It's always amazing to see kids, tired from the hike, suddenly find new energy when they spot all the slides, trampolines, and climbing spaces.

Fun factors for Moor Trail:

2. Embark on the moor quest

To start your adventure, just follow the easy-to-spot Moor Trail signs. Grab a free flyer at the beginning of the hike (just next to the Stoos Lake), which includes a map marking all the moor stations and a page with colorful circles – these are your quest! Each moor station has a "Moorsezeichen" (which literally means Morse Code) metal disk with bumps. Rub the disk onto your flyer at each station, and if you collect them all, you can claim a small prize at the shop next to the top Stoos funicular station.

We were initially puzzled because the rubbings don’t leave clear marks – but that’s the fun part! It’s all symbolic, and there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Even the youngest adventurers can join in.

3. Hit the fun stations along the way

Along the trail, you'll encounter interactive stations that offer unique ways to explore the world of moorlands. Each stop features educational boards filled with intriguing facts, as well as engaging activities. You can challenge yourself with the memory game along the bridge (our favorite!), delve into discovery games, marvel at giant statues of brush-like plants, enjoy letter games and more!

Along the Moor Trail, you'll also come across the first (or last, depending on your direction) marble rolling station of the Fronalp Trail. There's a ball dispenser right next to it where you can buy a wooden ball for 2 CHF. Just keep in mind, this will be the only rolling station on the Moor hike.

Fun factors for Fronalp Trail:

  1. Say hello to the goats

From mid-June, there’s also a goat petting zoo at Fronalpstock — right at the top of the chairlift. Possibly the goats with the best view in Switzerland!

Right next to the petting zoo, there’s also a lovely goat playground — we always stop here before starting the adventure.

  1. Roll marbles

Along the trail, you’ll also find marble-rolling stations — a great extra motivation for kids to keep walking. Wooden balls cost CHF 2 from the vending machine (coins only), and if your kids love marble runs as much as ours, this is a big win.

  1. Learn about farmer's life

There are also 11 information boards about farm life along the way — and with cows grazing nearby and open fields all around, it’s a lovely way to immerse yourself in the alpine farming world.

The fitness factor

The fitness factor for Moor Trail:

The hike is 1.6 km and can be walked in less than an hour, but with all the fun at the water playground and play stations, plus a picnic break, it took us almost 3 hours.

The path is mostly flat with a 15-meter ascent and descent, making it very easy. It consists mainly of a natural trail with a small section featuring a wooden bridge.

The path is safe and easy with no drop-offs, making it suitable even for younger kids. It is also off-road stroller-friendly.

The fitness factor for Fronalp Trail:

The hike is mostly downhill (4.5 km, 579 m descent) and can also be done in reverse if you’re up for a serious challenge. We did it downhill and, with plenty of breaks and fun stops along the way, it easily filled almost the whole day.

The path is safe with no drop-offs, but following the mountain terrain - so good shoes are recommended and no strollers.

The views factor

The views factor for Moor Trail:

Stoos and the hike are at around 1300 meters above sea level. The area is lush and green, offering beautiful views. You can see the lake and moorland up close, with mountains in the distance. While it's not a high mountain view, it's equally stunning.

The views factor for Moor Trail:

The Fronalp Trail starts at the Fronalpstock peak (1,922 m), where you’re treated to spectacular views over Lake Lucerne plus countless surrounding peaks. From there, the trail winds downhill through stunning alpine scenery — rocky paths, open meadows, and mountain fields — before finishing lower down, so you still get to enjoy lake views as part of the adventure.

The food factor

The food factor for Both Hikes:

Right next to the Stoos funicular station, you'll find two restaurants: Stoos Lodge Hotel and Restaurant Sternegg, with more dining options available around Stoos village. We tried Stoos Lodge, which is very family friendly, and were happy with their offerings, especially our family favorite – sweet potato fries!

Just next to Stoos Lake, you’ll find two beautiful picnic spots connected to both hikes. One is right by the lake, and the other is next to the marble-rolling station — both have wooden tables and barbecue facilities, with wood provided. Just bring your own food.

The food factor for Fronalp Trail:

At the top of the chairlift, you’ll also find the Fronalpstock Hotel & Restaurant — conveniently located right next to the goat petting enclosure and playground.
