The fun factor
Lenzburg Castle, dating back to the 11th century, is one of Switzerland’s oldest hilltop castles. Once home to nobles, poets, and adventurers, it now offers a great mix of history and fun — and is one of our favourite family spots.
Kids can dress up, explore a dragon-themed museum, and brave the dungeon, while adults enjoy immersive historical rooms. A half-day is plenty, but you can easily make it a full-day trip by adding the nearby marble run hike from Burghalde Museum.

Here are our top 7 Fun Factors of Lenzburg Castle
Hit the Children's Museum
One of the highlights for families is the Children’s Museum, located in the attic of Lenzburg Castle. It’s super fun for kids - with hidden staircases, play kitchens and play castles waiting to be discovered. Kids can dress up as knights or princesses and get creative with arts and crafts. Our daughter absolutely loved pretending to be a queen and twirling through the castle like it was her royal home.
2. Step into the world of Polar Explorers
Right above the children’s museum, there’s an explorer-themed exhibition called PLIRRK! — perfect for slightly older kids (6+). It's an imaginative space where kids can dive into the adventurous world of polar expeditions and sea voyages, inspired by the castle’s last resident, Lincoln Ellsworth through hands-on stations. We picked up a little quiz flyer at the entrance, which turned the whole visit into a fun treasure hunt!
3. Step back in time
As you wander through the rooms of Lenzburg Castle, you get a real sense of what life was like centuries ago. From knighthood and noble traditions to fully furnished bedrooms, kitchens, and even medieval bathrooms and prisons, the castle is full of authentic details! There’s a kid-friendly quiz that runs throughout the castle (a fun little challenge with some help from parents). What we loved most is how easy it is to explore with younger kids — many things are interactive or touchable, and the rest is clearly marked off with ropes, making it both safe and engaging for curious little hands.
Some of the exhibitions at Lenzburg Castle are interactive — you can touch, smell, guess, and listen your way through history. Our favourites were the rooms where authentic historical displays came to life with subtle digital projections. It’s a clever blend of old and new that helps kids (and adults!) really imagine what life in the past might have looked and felt like.
4. Dare to enter the Lenzburg Castle dragon’s lair
Let’s be honest — no proper castle adventure is complete without a dragon. And at Lenzburg Castle, you’ll find Fauchi, the legendary castle dragon. Kids can peek into his smoky cave and then explore the Dragon Research Station to check out dragon skin, eggs, and fun facts. It was a highlight for our little one.
5. Explore the courtyard
The castle courtyard is a nice spot to take a break — there’s a small but beautiful garden, space with table and benches to have a picnic (yes, you can bring your own food!), and one of our favourite little discoveries: the deepest well we’ve ever seen. You can pull water from a nearby pond with a bucket and pour it in — then count the seconds (about six!) until you hear it hit the bottom. Simple, fun, and oddly satisfying — definitely a hit with the kids!
6. Run your own mini medieval town
Right in front of the castle, there’s a charming play area that looks like a tiny medieval town — complete with a Rathaus, bakery, butcher, and more. Kids can jump straight into pretend play, running their own little village while parents take a well-earned break on a nearby bench.
7. Make it a full day with a marble rolling hike
If you want to turn your castle visit into a full-day adventure, we highly recommend adding a 2 km marble rolling hike! It starts at the Burghalde Museum, about a 10-minute walk from the castle, and is part of their Sagenzauber exhibition (not Lenzburg castle). You can grab a wooden ball for CHF 10 from the Burghalde Museum and roll it down fun tracks along the way. There are a few optional storytelling stops in Swiss German, and the trail loops back near the castle. It’s not fully stroller-friendly, but you can skip the short section with stairs and take a small detour. More details here.
The food factor
There’s a small bistro on the castle grounds with a simple fast-food-style menu and seating, but we chose to have a picnic in the courtyard with food we brought from home — and it was perfect. That said, we do recommend popping into the bistro for a dragon cookie! It’s not exactly healthy, but it turns your kid’s tongue and mouth green, which is pretty hilarious and guaranteed to be a hit.
If you're after something more substantial, there are cafés and restaurants in Lenzburg town, just a 10-minute walk from the castle — right near the start of the marble rolling hike.
