The fun factor

Brunni Engelberg, often called the "sunny side of Engelberg," is one of the two ski resorts in the area (the other being Titlis). While it’s perhaps less known, smaller, and lower in altitude than Titlis,it has a strong focus on families, and can also be less crowded—though that depends on the day.

What sets Brunni apart is its family-friendly attractions, designed to appeal to both kids and parents. The resort has a fun Globi theme—you’ll see Globi everywhere, from the slopes to the shops, and sometimes even as a visiting mascot. (For those unfamiliar, Globi is a beloved Swiss cartoon character—a cheerful blue parrot in checkered pants, popular with children.)

Brunni offers a range of options for all kinds of family adventures. You can enjoy full-day outings, half-day activities, or mix and match experiences to suit your family’s preferences.

To help you choose and plan, we’ve detailed three adventure options below:

Adventure 1: Beginner base at Klostermatte

No gondola needed

  1. Learn to ski or have fun sledding

    Klostermatte

Klostermatte is a great spot for beginners, conveniently located right next to the parking lot—no gondola or lift needed to get there.

If you don’t have your own gear, there’s a rental shop on-site to sort you out - you can check their prices here.

The setup is perfect for learning at your own pace. There’s a section for small kids trying skis for the first time, plus three magic carpets (30, 100, and 140 meters), a pull lift, and a T-bar lift. It’s designed so you can progress step by step as you gain confidence.

The slope itself has some fun features, like poles, a wave trough track, and small jumps. Everything is Globi-themed—if you’re not familiar, Globi is a beloved Swiss cartoon character (a blue parrot in checkered pants) who’s a big hit with kids.

You can use the facilities on your own (you’ll need a ticket to use the lifts) or book a lesson with one of the three ski schools (Ski School Engelberg, Ski School Prime, Board Local). We didn’t try the schools ourselves but had a good look around—they seem well-organized.

And if skiing isn’t your focus, you can also use the area for sledding from small hills — just remember to a helmet (safety first!). You can also rent sledges from the rental shop.

  1. The food factor: Take a break at the Family Restaurant OX

    Klostermatte

Right next to it is the Family Restaurant OX, offering a self-serve buffet and the ever-popular Globi ice cream—a perfect reward after a day out. There’s also a small play corner with toys, giving kids a chance to play while you take a well-earned break.

Klostermatte is perfect for a half-day adventure, which you can combine with the activities at Ristis and Brunnihütte (described below), a walk around Engelberg town, or enjoy as part of a full day of fun.

Adventure 2: Summit fun at Ristis

With gondola access

  1. Ski, sledge, and relax at Yeti Park

    Ristis

If you’re up for more adventures, hop on the gondola from Klostermatte, right next to the beginner ski area, and head up to Ristis. At the top, you’ll find Yeti Park—a small hill with another magic carpet (99m long) that’s great for learning to ski or sledding on little sledges. No ski pass is needed—it’s free to use.

For parents, there are sun loungers and a kiosk with a view of the hill, making it easy to relax and keep an eye on the kids. It has more of a mountain station vibe, which we really enjoy—laid-back, with a touch of alpine charm.

Plus, between Ristis Restaurant and Yeti Park, there’s a small playground with a swing and diggers.

  1. Dive into the world of Globi

    Ristis

Brunni Engelberg has a playful Globi theme that adds a unique charm to the experience. At Ristis Restaurant, there’s a shop where you can browse Globi merchandise—books, clothing, and souvenirs.

Occasionally, Globi himself makes an appearance. We were lucky to meet him during our visit, and our kid was thrilled—it was such a fun surprise that added to the day.

  1. The food factor: Ristis Restaurant

    Ristis

Right next to the Ristis gondola station is one of our favorite spots to have lunch or wrap up the day—Ristis Restaurant. It offers two sections: a self-serve area and a seated dining option, both overlooking Yeti Park with great views.

Inside, there’s a cozy kids’ playroom with a train table, blocks, and other toys, which we found perfect for keeping the kids entertained while we took a well-earned break.

Adventure 3: Summit fun from Brunihütte to Ristis

With gondola & Chairlift access

  1. Sledge through adventure

    Brunnihütte to Ristis

And for even more adventures, there’s a fantastic family "Rinderbühl" sledge run. You can rent sledges from the kiosk right next to Yeti Park, hop on the chairlift up to Brunnihütte, and enjoy a 1.8 km ride down. The chairlift is equipped to carry sledges on the side, and the staff is there to help load and unload them—so no worries about logistics.

The run is easy and mostly flat, but there are some drop-offs and narrower sections, so make sure you know how to turn and control your speed. Younger kids can ride together with an adult on the same sledge—we do this with our 5-year-old, and it works great. There’s a short flat section where you’ll need to walk, but it adds a bit of charm to the adventure. It’s such a fun way to explore nature while sledging!

And don’t forget helmets— although they are not mandatory, we believe they’re a must for safety!

  1. Hit the slopes

    Brunnihütte to Ristis

If you have skiers in the family, they can explore four slopes, accessible via the chairlift and Switzerland’s steepest pull lift:

  • Schönegg - Brunnihütte (Red, Intermediate)

  • Schönegg (Black, Difficult)

  • Brunnihütte - Ristis (3a: Red, Intermediate / 3b: Blue, Easy)

These slopes cater to a range of skill levels, making it easy for everyone in the family to have a great time. We also found them less crowded than those at larger resorts, as the area is smaller and less well-known. It’s a perfect spot if you want to mix in a bit of skiing with other activities—while some family members hit the slopes, others can enjoy sledging, exploring Yeti Park, or simply soaking in the relaxed mountain vibe.

The views factor

Even at 1,600 meters, the views from Ristis & Brunihütte stations are breathtaking. The snowy peaks, forests, and rolling hills create a stunning panorama. There’s something about it that feels more relaxing, cozy, and charming compared to the dramatic high-mountain vistas—it’s the kind of view that invites you to slow down and soak it all in.
